The karenderiya across a university.
It all started back in 2002 with a tiny, air-conditioned carinderia just across the street from the University of San Carlos in Talamban. Our founder, Chef Jan Rodriguez, had recently moved back from New Jersey with a notebook full of ideas and a simple mission: to serve great food with zero shortcuts. The name Ilaputi—combining the Cebuano word "Ila" (belonging to) with "Puti," Chef Jan's childhood nickname—was a nod to these personal, homegrown roots.
Before long, that little college-town hangout began to draw lines out the door. People weren’t just coming for a quick lunch; they were coming for a completely new kind of dining experience.
As we grew, so did our vision. Chef Jan pioneered a concept we call Asian Soul Food—a vibrant, flavor-forward celebration of Southeast Asian comfort food. Every single sauce, marinade, and stock on our menu is crafted entirely from scratch with serious culinary intention. We don't believe in cutting corners, and we definitely don't believe in small plates. Our trademark has always been exceptionally generous portions made to be shared and celebrated.
Today, Ilaputi has evolved into a sleek, modern dining space, but our core hasn't changed a bit. We remain a bustling gathering place for loyal regulars and curious foodies alike. Whether you've been dining with us since our university days or you're stepping through our doors for the very first time, we invite you to sit back, relax, and taste the soul in every bite.
